Lost in the Jungle with attacking Ants

Monday, June 02, 2008

We started our treack to the '3 layered waterfalls' at about 11:00 on Saturday. Dr. Gouchen, his wife and 2 college guys visiting them came along for the journey. We started the treack through RVA and then up to the railroad tracks. We marched along the tracks for about 2 miles, looking for our amred gurds that were to guide us to the falls. We stopped to rest while part of the group continued a little ways to find the guards. While waiting some of the team went down a steep trail to explore an old train crash that layed at the bottom of a revene. I decided to stay up top and 'save my energy'. Looking down the tracks I spotted 2 men with rifles. They were our guards. We waited as all the team gathered to begin the journey. We walked a little further down the tracks and then went off into the bush. The trail was distinct as we began through the bush. we followed a pipeline much of the way on the edge of cliffs and thick bush. The further we got into the jungle the thicker the bush became and lesss distinct the trail became. The climb became an obtacle course with trees to climb under, rocks to hop across, revenes to jump over, and vines to grab onto. The rocks and mud were slippery as I clibed uphill. The bush was scratching ass parts of my body and slapping me in the face as I swam through the leaves and trees. I could only see just a few feet in front of me. I was grabbing anything I could to pull myself up and hoping I didnt grab onto somthing live. The final climb was the worst. The Safari Ants found us. As my feet sunk into the dirt and I slipped on the grass, I began to see ants come out from all the dirt around me. The little clack ants were bittling me and the giant Safari ants were bitting and not letting go. the whole group was getting attacked by the giant Safari ants as we tried for the final climb. At this point we were all slapping ourselves and yelling at the ants. We finally made it to the 'top' to where the guards had stopped. "Here are the biggest waterfalls", they said. To our amazement and discouragement all we saw was a really tall cliff with very little water trickling down. Not the '3 layered' water fall we had expected.
The jnourney down the hill was just as adventurous and tough. I was grabbing everything to keep from sliding all the way down the hill. As the ants were still attacking, I slipped and slidded all the way back down to the river. There I stripped off my shoes and pulled up my ant to begin destroying the killer ants. These ants attached themsleves to my skin and held on. To get them off, I had to pull them and my skin away. I counted about 25 on me.
The river was not the bottom, We still had longer to go. At one reven to jump over a vine hung over. The guy in front of me swung accross using the vine. Good idea!!?!!?!! I gave it a shot but forgot to let go. I slid down the vine and down the hill. Tarzan made it look sooo easy.
We finally made it back to the Railroad tracks for our final trek. The trek for the waterfall is an experience I will not forget. It was the most adventurous thing I think I have done.

Safely back at the house we cleaned up and got ready to go to Nairobi with the Gouchen family and their visittors. We went to The Village to eat and shop around. The drive there and back was an adventure in itself!! When we got back we went to the Gouchen's house and had a fun and relaxing time playing Wii tennis and Cranium!!
